In short
The Colonial Zone (Ciudad Colonial) is the historic heart of Santo Domingo and the first permanent European settlement in the Americas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its cobbled streets hold the Cathedral of Santo Domingo — the oldest in the Americas — the Alcázar de Colón, the Ozama Fortress and Calle Las Damas. The metro does not run into the Colonial Zone: the nearest station is Joaquín Balaguer on Line 1, from where it is about an 18-minute walk to the south-east, or a short taxi ride.
