Opening of Santo Domingo Metro
Currently, the Santo Domingo Metro system has two operational lines, Lines 1 and 2, and development work is underway to build Lines 3 and 4.
Construction of the Line 1 line of the Santo Domingo Metro began following the Executive Branch’s approval of Decree No. 477-05, which established the Office for Transportation Reorganization, also known as OPRET, to design and build what is now known as the Santo DomingoMetro.
The Line 1 line was inaugurated in 2009 and runs from the north of the city to the south, covering 14.5 km and connecting the Mamá Tingó station with the Centro De Los Héroes station. The distinctive color of this line is blue.
The creation of this line marked a turning point for the city’s residents, as before its creation there was significant congestion when traveling, and residents frequently wasted a great deal of time commuting, especially when heading to the center of Santo Domingo.
Thanks to this mode of transportation, traffic congestion for the city’s residents was greatly alleviated.
In addition to this function, the metro serves another very important purpose, as its route passes through several areas with various recreational facilities. These include restaurants, shopping centers, parks, theaters, hotels, and many other interesting sites and places to enjoy.
The Line 2 was inaugurated in two sections: Section 2A in 2013 and Section 2B in 2018.
This Line 2 metro line was built in two phases. The first phase, known as Section 2A, consisted of 14 underground stations covering a distance of nearly 13 km. Initially, the OPRET made the decision to build this section to ensure the smooth operation and service provided by the already established Line 1.
The second phase, known as Section 2B, involved the construction of four new metro stations along a stretch of more than 3 kilometers.
